Prix de Spécialisé et Prix Fançois Vidal

11/29/2012

Dear Friends!

Following the examination at the end of my second semester in Toulouse, I am happy to report that I have been awarded the "Prix de Spécialisé," mention "très bien," and "avec les salutations du jury” -  the highest award possible.  The exam is divided into two parts, the first being held at the Musée des Augustins on the beautiful Ahrent Organ.  There participants are required to present one work of the 16th or 17th century Norddeutsche tradition, and one work of his/her own choosing, to be prepared alone.  In the second round, held at the Basilque Saint-Sernin on the 1888 Cavaillé-Coll Organ, all participants are required to present the Deux Fantaisies of Jehan Alain, and a large work of his/her choice.  I chose the following program:

Matthias Weckmann: Magnificat Secundi Toni (4 verses)

Georg Muffat: Toccata Decima (Aparatus Musico-Organisticus)

Jehan Alain: Deux Fantaisies

Charles-Marie Widor: Final de la Symphonie Romane, Op. 73

It was a beautiful official conclusion to a most transformative, inspiring, exciting, challenging, and eye-opening year living in Toulouse and exploring France.  The exposure to so many historic and famous instruments, the interesting performing opportunities, the many new friendships, and the greater understanding and broader perspective that time abroad afford have made this an inestimably valuable and life-changing experience indeed.  I was truly honored, moreover, to receive the Prix François Vidal from the city of Toulouse - a prize given to one student from the Toulouse Conservatoire each year that particularly excelled in the final exam and their studies.  I will never forget these extraordinary times in Toulouse, and though I am sad to leave, I am excited to know that this marks only the beginning of a long relationship with the city and its inhabitants!
